I’ve been feeling inspired after working with a first-time Saks customer who I am hoping will become a client, as we set out to find her a dress for a wedding where there will be complicated relationships and themes to adapt to. Often times when I am approached by a customer who wants to find a dress, I want to run the other way - especially when that dress is from the ball gown department. And something I realized last night while discussing my sales work and my fashion writing with this lovely beautiful woman is that a reason why dress shopping is so difficult is because of the emotions involved in the dress and in the expectations of the events for which the dress will be worn. In a high-end department store, image is important. What is glamorous, exquisite, and even excessive are demanded. An impossible standard that is supposed to represent beauty and success which very few people even in middle to upper class society can achieve. And in the haze of beheld desire, something that I have noticed recently is more women coming in looking for plus-sized garments, and not having any options to purchase. I realized as we come into the first wave of the 2019 spring / summer collection, I felt badly telling these women that we cannot service them. I never felt uncomfortable about the way we as a society treat plus-sized women. In my previous fashion retailer store, I would often hear complaints when I directed customers to the plus-sized section, "Nice. Stick us in the back." Fashion is making efforts to be eco-friendly. While it is a leading culprit in pollution, 1 , 2   I wanted to still celebrate the efforts that many designers are making in order to at least in some way reduce their carbon footprints.  Here are some brands that I personally work with, and some of the steps they are taking to become leaders in sustainable fashion.  Cinzia Rocca eco fur Weekend Max Mara virgin wool Tagliatore cupro ("vegan silk") Mackage responsible down certified Save The Duck with PLUMTECH® instead of down 360Cashmere  Traceable Cashmere Sanctuary recycled polyester/plastic (and super soft!)
